Middle School Program

High School Readiness

There are many great options for Middle School students in Beaverton. However, most HCCS Elementary families choose to stay through Middle School for these reasons:

  • Continued Immersion. The additional three years of language and culture immersion greatly increase Chinese language retention and intercultural competence.
  • K-8 Advantage. Studies have found that students in K-8 programs demonstrate fewer behavioral problems and higher academic achievement than those who transition to a new Middle School. (Read more at ASCD.org)
  • Social-Emotional Wellness. With smaller class sizes and a supportive community, HCCS Middle School students have a safe place to explore, grow and push themselves.

Curriculum

In grades 6-8, English instruction time increases as more advanced English is required to prepare for high school and elective classes are introduced. In the 2025-2026 school year, Middle School will begin using a block schedule with rotating classes.

Chinese Immersion

Building on the foundational language skills set in Elementary School, our Chinese curriculum continues building in increasingly advanced vocabulary and conversational skills, while applying reading and writing skills to new academic activities. The goal is for students’ to develop high proficiency in order to retain the language after graduating. To implement our Chinese curriculum, our educators incorporate resources from the Huanle Huoban textbook series and Level Learning

English Language Arts

Amplify ELA is designed specifically for grades 6-8. Students learn to attack any complex text and make observations, grapple with interesting ideas, and find relevance for themselves. Amplify ELA aligns with state standards and supports our school’s goals to develop critical thinking skills.

Math

Math is taught in both English and Chinese using Big Ideas Math. This program focuses on real-world problem solving and develops strategic mathematical thinkers with highly visual material. Big Ideas Math supports learning in two languages and provides more support for meeting individual students’ needs.

Science

Science is taught in English to develop a more advanced, subject-specific vocabulary and better prepare them for high school. Routine practice with the scientific method through hands-on experiments provides an engaging learning experience.

Social Studies

Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, Social Studies will be taught in both English and Chinese to increase Chinese language learning in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Middle school utilizes TCI textbooks and resources.

Elective Classes

Middle School students participate in choosing elective classes, with the most popular classes being Chinese Cooking and Yearbook. Other classes have included Music History, Drama, Board Games and more.
