Oct 2024 – Hope’s O.B.O.B. team takes reading comprehension beyond the page and into personal connections at Raleigh Hills Assisted Living.

OBOB stands for Oregon Battle of the Books, a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program. OBOB teams read a selection of books in preparation for the great battle, a tournament somewhat like Jeopardy, in which teams earn points by answering questions about the books on the book list.

The book on the list is Before the Ever After by Jacqueline Woodson. Before Ever After is about a child whose parent suffers from profound memory loss. This year Hope’s OBOB team is co-led by parent volunteers, Jinyi Voelker and Brandy Turnbull.

“Many of these kids have never met someone who experiences these challenges,” said Turnbull, who helped coordinate a visit to Raleigh Hills Assisted Living & Memory Care facility for the team.  “They read to them, played games and overall had a wonderful morning.”

This is one of many amazing examples of how Hope parent volunteers provide additional learning opportunities that can impact student’s in the classroom.
Hope’s OBOB team is open to students in grades 3 to 5 who enjoy reading. This after-school team is run by parent volunteers and has helped students to broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, and provides an opportunity to engage in cooperative learning and teamwork with peers.
