Admissions Process

The admissions process has three main steps: Tour, Apply & Register.

Admissions Guidelines

Eligibility: Beaverton School District policy requires students to be age five on or before September 1st to enter kindergarten. See Admissions & Enrollment Policy for Early Entry requirements.

Requirements: Guardians must provide a copy of their driver’s license as proof of address prior to the lottery in order to be eligible for in-district priority.

Proficiency Policy: Students seeking to enroll in grades 3-8 must complete and pass a Chinese language proficiency test. HCCS will accept students who are functioning up to two years below grade level in Chinese. See Proficiency Policy.

How The Lottery Works

Step 1:

All applications received prior to the deadline will be sorted into priority groups:

  • First Priority: Siblings of students currently enrolled at the time of the lottery
  • Second Priority: In-District residents of Beaverton School District. See BSD Boundary Map.
  • Third Priority: Out-of-District residents

Step 2:

Before the lottery is run, the age and address of each applicant is verified.

Step 3:

When the lottery is run, applicants are randomly assigned a number, begining with #1, within their priority groups.

Step 4:

For every available seat in each grade, HCCS will offer an acceptance to the students on the lottery list, starting with #1 and going down. Once an offer has been made for every available seat, the remaining applicants are placed on a waitlist for their grade, in the same randomized order that was assigned during the lottery.

About the Waitlist

  • Applications received after the deadline are automatically placed at the end of the waitlist.

  • Those on the waiting list may be offered acceptance any time during the year up until May 1st when an opening occurs according to their place on the list.

  • Waitlist is only valid for the specific academic year. Waitlist status does not carry over or influence the lottery or waitlist status of subsequent academic years.

  • You may inquire about your position on the waitlist at any time. We will notify you if you move up on the waitlist. We will only notify you we are offering acceptance to register.

Accepting an Offer to Register

  • Accepted applicants, either from the lottery or the waitlist, will receive an email and must reply within three business days to confirm acceptance.

  • Families are given 10 business days (starting on the day the acceptance letter was sent) to submit all required registration documents.

  • Families who fail to meet these deadlines may automatically forfeit their acceptance. Their spot will be offered to the next applicant on the waitlist.

Registration & Enrollment

All required registration documents will be included in the email offer of acceptance, and the dates and deadlines will be clearly outlined.

Registration documents include a registration form, request for records from previous schools (if applicable), and state required health forms.

Students accepted in grades 3 or higher will be scheduled for a Chinese language proficiency test at HCCS, which must be completed prior to enrollment.

Once you have completed the registration process, your student will be enrolled at HCCS.

Additional Notes:

Regarding twins/triplets who apply: if one child gets in, the other child applying is not automatically enrolled. They will only be offered the seat if their lottery number is also picked.

Students enrolled in the Tiny Dragons Preschool are not guaranteed admissions into HCCS Kindergarten class.

Sibling preference requires that the first sibling be enrolled in the school in the current year and plans to continue at HCCS the following year.

Non Discrimination Statement

Hope Chinese Charter School (HCCS) will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, creed, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, mental or physical disability, ancestry, athletic performance, special needs, proficiency in the English language or prior academic achievement when recruiting or admitting students.
